  1.    HBLs - an extra splash of colour
  2.  
  3.     Canvas offers the chance to use
  4. many more colours on-screen at once
  5. than most art packages. Up to 512
  6. colours (the whole ST palette) can be
  7. displayed at once!  However, you wont
  8. be able to see all these colours while
  9. you are drawing your picture - only the
  10. usual 16 colour palette (lo-res).
  11.     To access the extra colours is
  12. quite a complex process. There are 3
  13. options on the Colour Specbox with the
  14. letters 'HBL' in them. HBL refers to a
  15. programming technique called Horizontal
  16. Blanking. This is simply a means of
  17. 'interrupting' the graphics chip as it
  18. is in the process of drawing the
  19. picture onto the television/monitor
  20. screen. This process happens 50 times
  21. every second to produce the illusion of
  22. a stable picture. Every 4 scan lines
  23. (there are 200 scan lines in lo-res),
  24. the chip is interrupted by Canvas and
  25. given a new palette to display. This
  26. means that more than the usual 16
  27. colours can be displayed. Any number of
  28. HBLs may be set up using the options on
  29. the Colour Specbox so long as they are
  30. each no closer than 4 lines apart
  31. (Canvas wont allow you to put them any
  32. closer).
  33.     To create a HBL, select the palette
  34. you wish the chip to swap over to,
  35. using the Palette Infobar at the top of
  36. the Colour Specbox, and click on the
  37. 'Set HBL' option. A line will appear
  38. across the screen. The height of this
  39. line determines at what point the
  40. graphics chip will be interrupted and
  41. the new palette fed in. The Y
  42. co-ordinate is displayed in the top
  43. left of the screen. Click the right
  44. mouse button if you do not wish to set
  45. the HBL or the left button if you do.
  46.     Once you have set some HBLs, select
  47. the palette you want to appear at the
  48. very top of the screen using the
  49. Palette Infobar and click on 'View
  50. HBLs'. See... lots of colours!  Press
  51. any key to return to the Main Menu.

  55.     On the Canvas program disk are some
  56. files which demonstrate an example of
  57. the use of HBLs. First load in the
  58. "HBL_DEMO.CPT" compact picture, then
  59. load the "HBL_DEMO.HBL" file. Now View
  60. HBLs from the Colour Specbox - pretty
  61. eh? There may be other picture files
  62. which have HBLs to go with them.
